Grab Your Owner’s Manual
Firstly, you’ll want to locate your owner’s manual. While we can give you some general tips, the only place you’re going to find a guide to your specific model is in the manual. There, you’ll find servicing recommendations, important maintenance instructions, and even a service log to keep track of everything on paper. If you can’t locate your manual, or don’t have it, head to the BMW website to download a new copy.

The Battery
This is probably common in other vehicles as well, but at some point, your battery will start to wear out. You might start to notice it takes a little longer for your car to start or that the knobs on the dash don’t move for a moment after starting the vehicle (if your model still uses knobs and arrows). And, of course, eventually the check engine or battery light will turn on.
You might want to consider simply recharging it first. There’s only so many times you can recharge a battery before it’s time to get a new one, but you don’t necessarily have to throw it out once it starts to sputter.
If charging it doesn’t seem to work, then replacing it is probably the best option. Eventually, batteries get old and it’s safer and less frustrating to simply get a new one. If this still doesn’t do the trick, then there’s something else wrong, possibly with the alternator. Book an appointment with one of our experienced professionals to get it fixed.
Pro tip! You’ll also need to check the posts for corrosion. If you spot any, don’t panic. You can clean them with a hot cup of coffee and get back to driving, without needing to replace the entire battery.

Electrical Problems
This is also a big one, and not that uncommon for European cars in general. Even if your car doesn’t run exclusively on electricity, there are probably a lot of parts that are electronic. This has helped create better tech and performance and can make it easier to diagnose a malfunctioning vehicle. However, it also comes with its own set of challenges. If you have experience working with cars, there are guides on fixing certain issues, but electronic problems can be a little more complicated and can lead to more specific part replacements. Because of this, it’s best to contact your local BMW service department. Some common areas that will eventually need to be checked can include:
The central computer module
Anti-lock brake system
Window motors
Fuse box
